Recently we have been working closely with a fully wheelchair accessible independent living hostel in Jorpati near to Khagendra. Hostels like this are vitally important in Nepal as following spinal cord injury many students are forced to leave education as the rural terrain is often steep and unsuitable for wheelchairs. This leaves them socially isolated and without opportunities for work and education. The hostel allows students to live independently in Kathmandu, access education, recreation (including wheelchair basketball and table tennis) and work and drastically improves their quality of life.
The Hostel is locally managed and funded locally but some external support was sought for basic equipment. Thanks to your support we were able to provide 10 mattresses, 2 commodes and 5 cupboard units - everything the students needed in the Hostel
